Late Summer Update

As we are looking at ending our summer season, my thoughts begin to focus on fall and winter. There are some predictions that this fall and winter will be tougher than normal.

First, as the weather changes and the temperatures begin to cool, we gear up for the cold and rain. If you haven’t already, make sure you are stocked up on heating supplies (wood, oil, propane). If you have a generator, you should service it in preparation for potential use, you should change the batteries in flashlights and put a few cans of extra food in the pantry. A good plan to find more information on being prepared is ready.gov (I will mention this web site again below). This web site has extensive resources to help you be better prepared for what we might encounter during the winter months.

Second, we must remain vigilant as winter also brings flu season. Not only should we still be thinking about COVID 19, but also all the other strains of virus’ that resurge during these times we typically spend more time together indoors. Continue to practice good hygiene and avoid groups in tight quarters. Keep the safe practices as we have been told for the past 6 months:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  • Cover your cough and sneeze into a tissue.

  • Stay home if you’re sick.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • Keep your immune system strong by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and regular exercise, and by taking care of underlying health conditions.

  • Don’t touch your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have washed your hands.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects like doorknobs and surfaces like countertops.

  • Use cleaning products as directed.

Again, here is a good web site for more preparedness resources. https://www.ready.gov/
